Honestly, I didn’t know much about any of them beyond the basics. We needed something reliable, didn’t want visitors feeling spied on, and it had to handle weird lighting conditions – museums can be dark in places, bright in others.

Trying Stuff Out – The Messy Part

We decided to try the cheap option first. Got a couple of those infrared beam counters. Installation wasn’t too bad, just stick ’em on either side of a doorway. Big mistake. They were terrible. People walking side-by-side got counted as one. Kids running back and forth messed up the count completely. Groups clustering near the entrance? Forget about it. The numbers were all over the place. Then came the cameras. I was hesitant at first – sounded expensive and potentially invasive. But we talked to a vendor who explained how the modern ones just count shapes, they don’t record faces or anything identifiable. That eased some concerns. We set up a trial with an overhead video counter.

Figuring Out What Actually Worked

The video counter trial was revealing. We mounted it high above the main entrance. The setup took a bit more effort, needed power and a network connection up there. But once it was running and calibrated (basically drawing lines on the video feed screen to tell it where to count), the accuracy was impressive. We spent days manually click-counting people going in and out and comparing it to the system’s numbers. It was consistently hitting over 95% accuracy, even during busy periods.

It handled groups well, ignored people just lingering near the door, and wasn’t really affected by lighting changes. The main downside was the cost – definitely more upfront than the other types. But we figured the unreliable data from the cheaper options wasn’t worth much anyway. What’s the point of counting if the number is wrong?

What We Ended Up Doing

So, after all that back and forth, we decided the overhead video counting solution was the best fit for us, despite the higher initial cost. We got a few units installed at the main entrances and exits, and at the doorways to our most popular galleries.

The installation process itself involved running some network cables, which was a bit disruptive for a day or two, but the installers handled it okay. Getting them calibrated took some fiddling, adjusting the ‘count lines’ on the software to make sure they only triggered when someone actually crossed the threshold.

Now, we finally have reliable numbers. We can see peak hours clearly, track gallery popularity accurately, and generate reports that actually mean something. It wasn’t the simplest or cheapest path, but going through the process of trying different things really showed us what mattered most: accuracy and reliability in our specific environment.

Looking back, spending that extra time testing, even the failed attempts with the beams, was valuable. It helped us understand the limitations and justify the eventual cost of the better system.
