Okay, so I was digging into this whole “foot traffic counting” thing for real estate, and let me tell you, it’s a rabbit hole. But a useful one! I wanted to see if there was a way to really understand how many people were coming through properties – you know, to help with figuring out the best locations, setting rents, all that jazz.

First, I started poking around online. I mean, who doesn’t start with a good old-fashioned search these days? I was looking for anything – systems, gadgets, even crazy DIY ideas. I figured there had to be something better than just standing there with a clicker like some kind of bored security guard.

I stumbled across a few different options. Some were these fancy, high-tech sensor systems. Others were simpler, using cameras and some kind of software to count. And then, of course, there were the old-school manual methods, which…well, let’s just say I wasn’t too thrilled about those.

The Experiment Begins!

I decided to try a couple of things out. I’m no tech wizard, but I figured I could handle setting up a basic system.

  • The Camera Setup: First, I used a video camera to see.I got a cheap webcam and positioned it to get a clear view of the main entrance. The tough part was that I had to mark the area where the people I wanted to count were passing by.
  • Software Time: Then I find a software that can caculate the counting number of this area!

Counting, Counting, Counting

After all set, I turned on the cam and software, let it run for a few days, and I got data!

It’s was eye-opening. I could see the busiest times, the slowest days, everything. It was way more information than I would have gotten just guessing. And that is the basic process that I used to get data.
