Okay, so I needed to figure out how many people were actually walking into my little shop. I mean, I had a general idea, you know, busy days, slow days, but I wanted real numbers. So, I started looking into this whole “foot traffic tracking” thing.
The First Try: The Clicker Counter
My first attempt was super basic. I got one of those little clicker counter things, like the ones bouncers use at clubs. I just stood by the door and clicked it every time someone came in. Easy, right?
- Pros: Cheap, simple, no tech skills needed.
- Cons: Totally manual, I had to stand there all day, and let’s be honest, I forgot to click it sometimes when I got busy with customers. Plus, I had no idea when people came in, just the total for the day.
So, the clicker was a bust. I needed something better.
Leveling Up: The Door Sensor
Next, I found these door sensors online. They were pretty simple, too. You stick one part on the door frame and the other on the door itself. When the door opens, it breaks the connection and sends a signal to a little receiver that counts.
I installed it, which was pretty easy, just some double-sided tape and a couple of screws. The receiver had a little digital display showing the count. Much better than the clicker!
- Pros: Still pretty cheap, automatic counting, I could do other things besides standing by the door.
- Cons: Still only gave me a total count, no time data, and sometimes it counted twice if someone opened the door just a crack.
It was an improvement, but I still wasn’t getting the detailed info I wanted.
Getting Fancy: The Thermal Sensor
Then I started looking at more high-tech stuff. I found these thermal sensors that you mount above the door. They detect body heat, so they’re supposed to be more accurate than the door sensors. They also connect to your Wi-Fi and send the data to an app on your phone.
This one was a bit more complicated to set up. I had to drill some holes in the ceiling (which I’m not great at), and the Wi-Fi setup was a little fiddly. But, once I got it working, it was pretty cool.
The App will give more data about the traffic.
- Pros: More accurate counting, time data (I could see when the busiest times were!), data on my phone.
- Cons: More expensive, more complicated installation, needed Wi-Fi.
I have tried different methods and finally, I got what I expected.
